Transvaginal mesh manufacturer Endo Pharmaceuticals has offered $54.5 million to settle some of the thousands of transvaginal mesh lawsuits it faces. The unit of Endo offering the settlements, American Medical Systems Inc., estimated its liability to be at least $160 million at the end of March.
The company did not disclose how many transvaginal mesh lawsuits the money was intended to settle, though Endo is one of a few companies facing thousands of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse lawsuits. According to the company, more than 7,700 surgical mesh lawsuits were filed against it since 2008.
Hundreds of thousands of women have received transvaginal mesh implants to treat stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Many of the women have complained of serious transvaginal mesh side effects, including tissue damage, limited mobility and organ perforation.
