Vaginal Mesh Erosion

Vaginal mesh erosion occurs when the transvaginal mesh patch wears through the vaginal tissue, shifting from its original position and coming into contact with surrounding tissue and organs. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that transvaginal mesh complications such as vaginal scarring and mesh erosion can lead to a significant decrease in patient quality of life due to discomfort and pain.

Studies show that 10% of women who underwent surgery with transvaginal mesh for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) experienced mesh erosion within one year. Infection, urinary problems, and recurrence of prolapse or incontinence are all symptoms of vaginal mesh erosion.

In some transvaginal mesh cases, women have been forced to undergo repeat surgery to remove the product or to readdress their original medical condition.
